Skin Tag Removal Q & A

What are skin tags?

A skin tag is a noncancerous lesion made up of tissue, like fat and extra skin. A skin tag attaches to your body through a peduncle, a thick piece of tissue that forms a stalk.

The tags are not medically concerning, but it’s always a good idea to have them evaluated by Dr. Keene to ensure they aren’t another type of lesion — like a wart. Very rarely does skin cancer present looking like a skin tag.

Why do skin tags develop?

Some people have a genetic likelihood of developing skin tags. They most commonly appear after age 50, but you can develop them at any time.

Hormonal changes also play a role in skin tag development. Pregnant women, diabetics, and women with polycystic ovary syndrome, a hormonal imbalance, also are more likely to develop skin tags.

Can I get a skin tag anywhere on my body?

You can develop skin tags just about anywhere, including your:

  • Groin
  • Eyelids
  • Thighs
  • Armpits
  • Neck

It’s also possible for women to develop skin tags underneath their breasts. Dr. Keene can remove skin tags from just about anywhere you find bothersome.

Is skin tag removal necessary?

The decision to have a skin tag removed is a personal choice. If you are bothered by the way they look or find it gets caught on clothing or jewelry, you might be better off getting it removed.

Certain skin tags are more bothersome than others. If you have skin tags under your breasts, on your chest, or under your armpits, they may rub uncomfortably. Skin tags located on your eyelids can make you feel self-conscious.

Removing skin tags does not cause more to grow. If you aren’t bothered by a skin tag, there’s no medical reason to have it removed.

What happens during skin tag removal?

When you come in for skin tag removal, Dr. Keene numbs the affected area and snips the tag off using sterile scissors.

The entire appointment lasts just a few minutes. No downtime or specific aftercare is needed.
